Scripture Reading…Proverbs 31:10-31

Devotion

Mothers are a beautiful expression of selfless love. In the description we read from Proverbs 31, selfishness is about the last thing in this woman’s heart! How does one become so loving & giving? What compels a soul to give of itself without ever thinking of what will be returned? I’d suggest it’s the heart of Jesus. Agape’ love flows from His cross to our hearts. When Jesus is our standard, holiness & happiness follow. Praise God for our beloved Mothers!

An Elder’s wife once asked me not to preach on the Proverbs 31 woman, because “none of us can measure up to her!” Now listen, this precious sister was one who I would’ve pointed to if anyone had ever asked me to point out a “Proverbs 31 woman!” She did all the things you read about there for her family and for others! Yet, she’d never acknowledge that fact. Such selfless love is always coupled with a humble heart. Loving & humble. It reminds me of the description of Jesus we have in Philippians 2:6-11:

Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to 7 Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, 8 he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. 9 Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

We should all aspire to such love. It’s a good thing to set aside a day to honor Mothers. But the love they provide should be celebrated every day! It should be recognized for what strength it provides to our families, our communities and our world! How has your life been blessed by a Mother? And how will you honor her today?

CHALLENGE FOR THE DAY

  • Walk at least one mile today. (Maybe this is a family walk week. Either way, continue the habit of walking and talking with God!)

  • Respond to the online community.

  • Besides the usual Mother’s Day card & Flowers, let’s all honor our mother’s by taking action this week! Wash the dishes, clean up the house, wash her car, find a way to serve her with joy and enthusiasm! Maybe even ask her how you could serve her and then go the extra mile to make it even better!
